Jordan and I met Rob Fair at Science & Surplus Store for 81st Anniversary 70% off shopping.
Then Jordan and I worked on the RR from 3:15-4:30pm.
Here's what we did...
Jordan Osborn getting comfortable in his Engineer's Chair.

The CNW C40-8 derailed right here.
The front wheels of the 2nd power unit would jump the track right here.
That was one problem (#1).

Another view.

At this point, the CNW SD38-2 second power unit from wheel would jump the track here.
I had to lift the track just a bit and that solved the problem (#2)
BEFORE
AFTER

After fixing those two problems we went to Melrose Park
I traced the building bases/sidewalks.

Then I removed the "street" sections.

After I traced the building platform/sidewalk sections I shot this video.
If you don't know what you're looking for you may not be able to see what I did.

Instead I went to Mabel's birthday party at the Vaughn Center in Aurora.
Rob Fair's brother was in town and he and Faith were busy with family.

TRAIN DAY!
Looking forward to working with Carlos Baez, Dean Hatzis, Ed Nelson, Jordan Osborn this afternoon...but here's what really happened:
Dean came early (3:15pm) and met with Nancy Gatfield upstairs until 4:45pm. Worked 1 hr.
Ed Nelson came late but worked until 5:45pm (1 hr.)
Carlos Baez had to teach a class at work, so he couldn't come tonight.
Jordan came at 4pm and worked until closing 5:45pm (1.75 hrs.)

Jordan Osborn updating his trouble-shooting guide book.

Ed Nelson and Dean Hatzis drill 9/16th drill-bit through the column and all the way to Union Station "basement".

You can see the 4 larger holes where Dean Hatzis drilled thru the support columns.
We'll run the main electrical lines through these columns and then spread the wires throughout this level.

"Hello! Is anyone down there?"

Listening for the response.

From the bottom looking up you can see Dean's eye looking down.
He is eyeing up the hole he just drilled down.

One more check on clearance to the "basement".

We've secured this bottom level.
Next we'll build the supports around the edges and then begin construction on the second level.
Stayed tuned for more progress at Union Station.

Meanwhile, Ed Nelson and Jordan Osborn run the excursion train (shown in the background) checking for defects.
Found a couple spots where the train failed to move forward after stopping.
Interesting problem.
I haven't figured that one out yet.

Dean Hatzis and Ed Nelson fit a trim piece Dean cut this week into place.
Next week, we'll install all the trim about the layout.
Dean bought a 4x8 piece of hardwood and ripped it to 6 1/4" by 8' lengths.
Nice work, Dean!

Train Day:
Rob Fair, Josh Jones, Jordan Osborn worked from 6-7:30pm
Rob Fair working on the Crossing Signal.
It was a tough night. We weren't able to salvage any of the crossing signals tonight as we worked on the crossing flashing light circuit board.
Valuable lesson learned: Don't test the final product.

Josh Jones and Jordan Osborn work at Central Control Tower.

Josh Jones and Jordan Osborn test Rob Gerlach's transformers.
Yes, it looks like Jordan is falling asleep, but he was just playing with you.
Josh and Jordan also ran some test trains.

TRAIN DAY
Jordan Osborn, Ed Nelson (WELCOME BACK!), Dean Hatzis and me worked 4-5:30pm

The classic pose. Jordan Osborn at his best.

Ed Nelson is back in action!
Here he's working with Jordan Osborn trouble shooting a mainline train.

Dean Hatzis worked with me on Union Station.

Ed Nelson working on the mainline train.

An overview video of tonight's action.
Length: 00:00:17 sec.

Dean Hatzis taking notes on the trim pieces he'll be cutting soon.

Ed Nelson getting his finger nails dirty again.
Feels good, doesn't it?

Sunday, March 11, 2018
Jordan Osborn stopped by today and helped me get some work done.
Check this out...
We decided to work on the bridge at the north end of Melrose Park.

Jordan Osborn in his infamous pose.

More work on the bridge and the roadway that leads to it.

Jordan Osborn reviewing the troubleshooting log.
Yes, it's very troubling.

The cardboard pieces will go in the space I'm cutting out for them to fit.

Here are the cardboard pieces now in place.

Jordan doesn't look too happy here, but we did have a good time tonight working on the railroad.
This shot shows how we're moving all the commuter coaches and cabs to California Ave. yard.
Length: 00:00:12 sec.

I cut out the black tarp paper to use as the base for the downtown area above Chicago Terminal Union Station.
The piece I cut out is under the hardboard in the background.

Train Day! 6-7:30pm
Rob Fair and Jordan Osborn 6:45-8:15pm (1.5)
Interesting night...
Jordan Osborn checks over his trouble shooting pad.

Rob Fair works on securing the base level for Melrose Park.

First we clean off the surface.

Then we use Gorilla Glue to secure the foam board to the base.

You don't see it here, but we also glued down the "asphalt" layer as well.
As soon as I clear off the weights I'll take a picture of the "asphalt" layer for you to see.

My brother, Bill, has a friend who dropped off his train stuff for us to review.

Here's some tinplate track and equipment.

Here's his Lionel collection.

And here's his HO and N scale collection.
Should be fun to see what he has good and bad.

Train Day! 4-5:30pm
Carlos Baez 4-5pm (1) Josh Jones 4:15-5:30pm (1.25) Jordan Osborn 4-5:45pm (1.75)
Kinda disjointed night, but we did get some work done.
Carlos Baez and I discussed progress and technique for the first 30 minutes.

We talked about how to wire downtown Chicago.

Jordan Osborn has his sights on some real trouble shooting tonight.

Carlos Baez started ballasting the Mainline to Powder River Basin in Wyoming.

Progress made.

Ready for adhesive.

Jordan, Josh and I went back to Melrose Park - took off the weights and prepared for the next step.

While I cut out the footprints at Melrose Park, Jordan Osborn and Josh Jones ran the CNW SD38-2 engines leading a mixed freight.
No problems.

Here is the footprint for Melrose Park.
Now you should start seeing some real progress.
Next Step? Cut out the sidewalk and building bases.
